In 2019, during OBHS’ first ever week- long history camp, three middle school students from the 7th and 8th grade, immersed themselves in the history of the Civil War. Sponsored by our Education Fund, the students were led by Dr. Susannah Deily - Swearingen, whose doctorate is in American History, with a focus on the Civil War.
Students met at the Counting House Museum each day, engaged in discussions, and welcomed presenters such as Warren Spencer and Wendy Pirsig, who showed them the Counting House’s Civil War collection. Dr. Swearingen's main goal was to expose students to the rich historical opportunities and activities for experiential learning locally. Field trips included Strawbery Banke Museum, the Woodman Museum in Dover, and the Kittery Historical and Naval Museum. The students created their own newspaper at the end of the week as a concluding project to demonstrate what they learned. Many thanks to Linda Becker for coordinating the program with Marshwood Middle School and with Dr. Swearingen.
